Santa Monica Pier

Our August 26th meeting included our stalwart POP crew of Yami Yamauchi, Joe Hamamoto, Bennett Arnstein, "the two Joyces", Leon Brown, Michael Sanders, Bernie Slotnick and Dorothy Engleman and a surprise delegation from the West Coast Origami Guild: John Andrisan, Jim Cowling, Phyllis Snyder and Carol Stevens.

Our star-studded lineup of models taught and folded included V'Ann Cornelius's Frame; Yami Yamauchi's Jacob's Ladder, Blow Top, Spin Top, "Gotcha" Fish, Sphere of Peace with Bennett Arnstein's lock and Spinning Dreidel adapted from a waterbomb; Michael LaFosse's Alice Gray Butterfly; Makoto Yamaguchi's Talking Crow and Talking Mouth; Bennett Arnstein's Helicopter (diagrams featured in this month's POP News!); Joe Hamamoto's modification of Lillian Oppenheimer's Pecking Bird; Thoki Yenn's Calendar; John Montroll's Chess Board; Satoshi Kamiya's Bahamut; Dr. David Cohen's modification of Shari Lewis' Flying Fish; a two-fold Traditional Boat which was "launched" by a paper Fan; and a noble Bug of unknown origin.

After hearing a demo of a Traditional Banger and Rachel Katz's Noisemaker, John Andrisan took matters into his own hands and designed an amazingly cacophonous, four-fold Banger which was quickly adopted as POP's official Popper! Stay tuned for diagrams!

This month's Model-o-rama exhibit included Yami's playful "Gotcha" Fish and a display by Joe: a glued Butterfly Ball with Ball inside, Sphere of Peace by Yami, Susanna Kricskovics' Module, another Butterfly Ball with tassels, a Dimpled Truncated Tetrahedron by Hiro Okamoto and a Three Unit Stand adapted from a Fuse model.

Our Model of the Month is a wonderful action toy by Bennett Arnstein:

Vertical Rotation Axis Paper Helicopter

Our next meeting is September 23rd. Be there or be square!
